Access Health and Care

Current programmes

01
Cancer awareness

Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in the UK. Data shows that people from the Black and minority (BME) communities are more likely to have certain types of cancers than people from the other population groups. Cancers that commonly affect Black people include prostate cancer, myeloma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and liver cancer. Access Health and Care collaborates with partners in the NHS and other community and voluntary sector to raise awareness of cancer among the BME communities in London. This work includes dissemination of culturally-sensitive information, signposting of clients to screening and treatment services, and provision of support services for people diagnosed with cancer.

02
Sexual and reproductive health

The black and minority communities in the UK are overrepresented in the sexual and reproductive health care system. This is due to multiple and complex factors, key among which are lack of information and awareness, disempowerment, unsafe sexual practices, domestic violence, stigma, systemic and language barriers. We deliver culturally sensitive interventions to individuals and families affected by or at risk from sexually transmitted infections, unplanned teen pregnancies and domestic violence. We also work with partners agencies to ensure people requiring specialised care can get it promptly

03
Participatory arts and theatre

AActing, singing, dancing, and creative expression help reduce stress, boost confidence, and provide a healthy outlet for emotions. Theatre activities encourage physical movement, which can improve fitness, coordination, and energy levels. They also foster social connection, helping people build friendships, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging, which can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. At Access Health and Care, we use various art genres not only to entertain, but also to disseminate knowledge and awareness, and increase self-confidence and assertiveness in participants. For example, our participatory education theatre (PET) is a useful medium for promoting awareness about cancers, sexual and reproductive health, domestic violence and violence against women and girls (VAWG).

04
Environmental action

Many founder members of Access Health and Care are passionate about the environment. There is a clear link between a cleaner and aesthetic surroundings and good health. We run a series of activities involving our community in environmental measures to reduce waste, promote a culture of use, reduce and reuse, and change attitudes. A key activity under this programme is our upcycling project which involves transforming old and unwanted household textiles and fabrics into new and chic products that can be used again

05
Active lifestyles

An active lifestyle is crucial in maintaining good mental and physical health. Unfortunately, and anecdotally at least, people from the ethnic minorities do not exercise often enough. Through programme such as supervised walks, floor exercises, Zumba classes and Yoga, we help people to keep physically fit and active. It is the best approach to ensuring a healthy lifestyle
